Observation Narrative
The habitat is a sandy fluvial terrace situated ca. 1.5 m above the normal water level of the Chickahominy River and located on a narrow, inter-swamp peninsula. Soils here consist of deep, fine sand and growing conditions are rather xeric. The vegetation is quite unusual for this region, occurring considerably north of similar sandhill vegetation in SE Virginia. A peculiar mix of species is present; Carya pallida, Quercus margarettiae, Vaccinium arboreum, Quercus nigra, Symplocos tinctoria, Pityopsis graminifolia var. latifolia, Solidago tarda, and Trichostema setaceum are characteristic southeastern sandhill plants, while Arabis lyrata, Houstonia longifolia, Penstemon canescens, Quercus montana, and Silene caroliniana ssp. pensylvanica have distinctly northern/montane affinities. The site is part of a managed area owned by the Virginia Department of Forestry. This community, although very small (ca. two acres in extent) merits further ecological scrutiny and additional occurrences along the Chickahominy should be sought.
